THE RED-EYED DIVER DANCES: From Trauma to Grief to Gold
Join us at the 30th Annual Minnesota Men’s Conference
September 16-21, 2014 as we invoke deep earth powers: through song, myth and fellowship.
Inside every man there is a diver, often forgotten or unused, who knows the depths of the soul’s realm. That diver swims into grief and knows how to deal with the trauma and betrayals of family life, community and a public world gone mad with greed. As Robert Bly has taught in past conferences, “A man’s gold—his blessing—is found in his wound.” Like mythic diving birds, who feed underwater, then fly loudly and speedily from lake to lake, the red-eyed diver knows how to find the blessings in a man’s soul. And though the songs of diving birds are often filled with longing, when they dance together their songs are ecstatic. For millennia men and women understood that only after engaging woundedness can a human soar into the upper realms of glad relations, spirited learning, and ecstatic expression.
Returning this year we welcome Francis Weller, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer and soul activist as our premier guest teacher. Over the last thirty years, he has worked with grief in his practice as a psychotherapist and workshop leader. Beginning in 1997, he began to offer grief rituals as a way for communities to attend the large and small losses that touch each of our lives. In Francis Weller’s words “What has become clear to me is how difficult it is for us to attend to our grief in the absence of community. Carried privately, sorrow lingers in the soul, slowly pulling us below the surface of life and into the terrain of death.”
